Master Key Systems for Small Businesses: A Practical Guide
Understand key hierarchy, responsibility, employee turnover, and maintenance before building a master key system.

What a master key system does
A master key system organizes which keys operate which doors. The right design lets authorized people reach the spaces they need without giving every keyholder access to the entire property.
Design around responsibility
Start with a door list and access roles. Think about owners, managers, employees, vendors, maintenance, shared areas, and restricted rooms. A clear hierarchy is easier to maintain than a system designed only around today’s staff.
Plan for turnover
Document issued keys, recover keys when roles change, and schedule rekeying when a key cannot be accounted for. The system is only as strong as the process used to manage it.
