Broken Key Extraction and Lock Repair: What to Do Next
Avoid making a broken key worse. Learn when to stop, what details to share, and how repair or replacement may follow extraction.
Stop forcing the key
Twisting harder, adding random tools, or pushing the broken piece deeper can damage the cylinder and make extraction more difficult. Keep the door and lock in their current condition if it is safe to do so.
Share what happened
Tell the locksmith whether the key broke while turning, whether the lock was already sticking, and whether part of the key remains visible. A photo can help with initial routing, but an in-person inspection determines the repair.
Extraction may reveal a second problem
A worn key, misaligned door, damaged cylinder, or internal wear may have caused the break. After extraction, ask whether the lock is serviceable or whether replacement is the safer long-term choice.
